Discovery Production Under Threat | |
|
Land Rover have today announced that it may have to suspend production of the Discovery due to a dispute with a supplier.
The halting of production could threaten 1400 jobs at the Solihull plant where the Discovery is assembled, and the future of up to 10000 workers at suppliers in the West Midlands is in doubt.
The dispute is with the receivers acting on behalf of UPF-Thompson, the sole supplier of the chassis for the Discovery. UPF-Thompson went in liquidation last month, and receivers KPMG are requesting £45 million from Land Rover to ensure the future of the supplier.
Land Rover are refusing to pay, and are considering re-tooling to manufacture the chassis elsewhere. But this may take several months, as it is such a major component. Discovery production may be halted from the beginning of next month.
There are fears that the dispute may bring UK production of the Discovery to an end, as the UK is currently a very uncompetitive place to be manufacturing vehicles for export. The ending of production in the UK could cause huge job losses at Land Rover's suppliers in the West Midlands.
