Td5 Technical - Engine Cooling
Td5 uses a bottom hose-mounted thermostat design, protected by two Rover patents. One relates to the positioning of the thermostat to achieve ambient temperate sensing, and the to the pressure relief arrangement which helps to prevent early opening of the thermostat or multiple open/shut cycles by balancing the pump pressure against itself.
This arrangement is designed to encourage faster warm-up, and especially to provide warm water to the heater as soon as possible after a cold start.
A cross-flow radiator with aluminium matrix and plastic end tanks incorporates a separate cooling section for the fuel cooler and there is a new one-piece 18 inch (460 mm) cooling fan, with a moulded-in viscous drive.
An Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is fitted on the side of the water pump outlet. The
ECT sensor monitors coolant temperature from the engine and sends a signal back to the ECU for engine management and temperature gauge operation.
The engine coolant is also used to cool the engine oil and the diesel fuel supply to the engine. For the fuel cooler, there is a separate four-row radiator built into the main cooling system radiator.
