Td5 Technical - Air Induction & Filtration
Air is drawn into the air filter from the side of the wing (Defender) or via an under-wing nozzle (Discovery) in order to source cool, dry air and to optimise the vehicle's wading capability.
There is cyclone built into the intake system to give maximum dust extraction and longer life for the filter element. An ambient air pressure (AAP) sensor in the air filter, and a thick-film mess air flow meter (MAF) in the engine inlet air flow provides the ECU with intake air information.
The new Garrett GT20 turbocharger, developed for the Td5, is based on the successful GT15 turbo used on the Rover L-series diesel. These turbochargers incorporate a new generation bearing system and improved aerodynamic characteristics.
A new system of electronic waste gate modulation (on the Discovery and 2003-on Defenders) is used to optimise the boost, and there is a horizontal flow aluminium air-to-air intercooler.
The aluminium inlet manifold has curved intake pipes to enhance torque and incorporates an inlet manifold pressure/temperature sensor (MAP and IAT) for the ECU.
The inlet manifold also incorporates an Exhaust Gas Regulation (EGR) system to reduce NO2 emissions in the exhaust gas. In EU2 vehicles a vacuum valve is actuated by an ECU-controlled modulator, which allows exhaust gas into the combustion chamber to reduce the combustion temperature. In EU3 vehicles, an EGR cooler (exhaust gas to engine coolant) is used to increase the density of the exhaust gas going into the engine in order to reduce the combustion temperature further.
